Text: In the dark surge of water you are surrounded by rapids but if you slow down time you may be almost still buoyed by the wide water your body lifted up up up towards the surface foam at your shoulders hair cool, wet cheeks glistening with droplets like aqueous diamonds watered fallen if you close your eyes in this held moment you can feel your shape softly outlined with river almost unweighted you taste the tide of glaciers the rain of past lagoons the clouds over red-rose peaks lip, lip tender with biting let go into the lissome undoing of wanting the edge of earth a shore distance let go and fall into the suspension float in the river you have a body light buoyed by being a body in the water in the river in the dream let go of your lip, lip sip light So, you might sip your tea now if you have not already You might close your eyes and taste the color of the tea the rare color blue the spectrum of red sucked in the water opens itself with what remains to your or our closed eyes it holds you or us tenderly and softly you hold yourself in the run of the river rush becoming you and you in it the flavor of such kind water on your lip, lip let go of the vest, the line, the oar current pulls you just where you need to go if you slow down time if are almost still allow your lips to touch the rim of your cup the liquid warm meets the edge of you becomes you keep drinking your tea slowly with attention until the cup holds only the blossoms and stems the leaves leaving themselves as blue residue flip your cup what do you see the shape of the wave you ride the form of a body you love the growth of an unknowable dream whatever it is how does it mean for what is next what is next is really now anyways if you close your eyes in this held moment the water that holds you is ancient cycling from sky to body to earth and back again and again your lip alone is made of 16 layers of tissue each holding millions of cells holding millions of molecules of water made part of you with your breath your drink let go let go your lip lip into the strange trust of liquid dark in night but brilliant still the water holds you and you hold it and you are beautifully perfectly surrounded as a lifted light being you may be almost still buoyed by the wide water your body lifted up up up towards the surface with your eyes closed your tea cup turned your body full of water and of light and bone and flesh feel the rush of present into future of water into your very own life In the dark surge of water you are surrounded by water, by the rare deep blue that holds you you have a body light buoyed by being a body in the water in the river in the dream let go of your lip, lip sip light

about

In the overwhelming flood, what is buoyed to the surface?

The piece was created as part of the School of Nonfunctional Studies 1:1 Tea Service Program. The piece was created specifically for a sole audience member and performed live for that individual over Zoom. The audience also received a specialized tea blend and tea cake for consuming while watching.

More about Tea Service 1:1

1:1 Tea Service is a ritual and a performance experience created for one person. Tea is offered to the audience member both as a healing balm and as a tool for fortune telling. The 1:1 Service, lasting 30-45 minutes, sets forth actions and gestures designed to mend what is torn and ease what might be tender, and nourish. Through meditative audio and invocation, the performer invites the audience member to reflect on an important question in their own lives and, with the performer, divine a response. Each performance is unique and created through a brief advance exchange with the audience member. The result is an intimate, immersive 1:1 Service of sound, food and beverage, performance, and divination.

Depthless appreciation for the care-filled recording, mixing, and attention of DBP without whom this work would be entirely ephemeral.
